Fractional Laser resurfacing utilizes a process of “fractional photothermolysis,” in which thousands of microscopic laser columns treat select pixels of skin without affecting the surrounding tissue. The 1540 Icon™ laser delivers thousands of microcolumns of laser energy which penetrate deep within the dermal layer of the skin, triggering restorative changes in skin cells to produce collagen and elastin. The target of 1540 Fractional laser is not melanin or hemoglobin in capillaries, but water molecules within the collagen layer of the dermis. Is Fractional Laser Resurfacing painful?

Clients describe a pin and needle sensation during this laser treatment. Dr Hudson applies a topical compounded numbing agent cream thirty minutes prior to the treatment to minimize discomfort. A mild burning sensation occurs by the end of treatment, which typically lasts no more than a few hours.

How many sessions will I need?

What can I expect during a treatment?

A topical numbing cream is applied to the intended treatment areas thirty minutes before beginning the treatment. Eye shields will be applied to protect your eyes from the light of the laser during your treatment. During treatment, you will typically feel a warming sensation, but you should not experience any pain. Treatments typically require between 30 to 40 minutes to perform for a full face. Treatments are performed every 3 to 6 weeks. The 1540 Fractional Laser is safe for use on any area of the body, including the face, neck, chest, décolletage, arms, and hands. The 1540 Fractional Laser can be combined with other medical aesthetic, laser, and anti-aging treatments.

What should I expect after a treatment?

After a treatment, you will experience a mild sunburn sensation for about an hour and minimal discomfort. Ice can be applied to cool the skin. Most clients experience mild redness and swelling which can last a couple of days. Your skin will have a pinkish tone for five to seven days. This is a normal sign that the skin is deeply healing. Flaking and bronzing, which are part of the normal process of skin repair, may also occur. Patients are able to return to routine activities the same day and resume normal activities. You may apply make-up or shave soon after treatment. It is important to apply an SPF 30 sunscreen daily during the healing phase and for several months after to protect the new skin.

A majority of clients see noticeable improvements in skin texture, tone, and discoloration within a week following treatment which continue to improve or up to 3 months after the last treatment. More significant improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, and skin tightness are obtained by completing a series of treatments. The formation of new collagen and elastin continues for up to 6 months following the last laser treatment. Collagen and elastin continue to be synthesized and remodeled which contributes to the improved appearance of treated skin.
