Acne Treatment

The presence of acne can greatly affect your appearance and reduce your self confidence. At Regenesis, we understand this and offer several effective treatments  to combat acne resulting in clearer skin. Dr Hudson can customize an  individualized acne treatment program just for you.

The cause of acne is often attributed to the production of excess oil and sebum,  bacteria, hormones, dead skin cells, ingrown hair, and clogged pores. Although  acne is typically associated with hormonal fluctuations experienced during your  teenage years, many adults can experience acne. Oil and dead skin cells initially  clog the pores of your skin. Pores are essentially hair follicles that contain an oil  producing sebaceous gland. These pores can therefore easily become clogged with  oil and dead skin cells. The bacteria Propionibacterium Acnes (and others) occur  naturally on the skin, but in large numbers they can trigger acne. The clogged  pores trap bacteria allowing them to multiply in a closed environment. Hormonal  changes, especially testosterone, can increase oil production of the skin. This  increase in oil allows pores to become clogged more easily.

Identifying which type of acne is present is the key to successful treatment. Acne  may be categorized as noninflammatory or inflammatory. Subtypes of acne within  these two categories include: blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules,  and cysts.

Types of Acne Treatment

At Regenesis Medical Spa, we offer a wide range of specialized acne treatments that are designed to treat different skin types and varying degrees of acne.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels provide deep exfoliation and removes layers of damaged skin. This allows for fresh, healthy skin cells to come to the surface. During this treatment, a solution containing an alpha-hydroxy acids or a beta hydroxy acid (i.e. salicylic acid) is applied to your skin. Salicylic acid peels are wonderful for unclogging skin pores.

Prescription Medications

Dr. Hudson can prescribe a variety of topical and oral acne treatments. These can include prescription antibiotics such as Doxycycline and Minocycline, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Retinoid products keep pimples from forming. It causes increased turnover of skin cells, which keeps your pores from becoming clogged. Retinol products require eight to twelve weeks to show improvement. These products may appear to worsen your skin initially as they uncover pimples that are already forming under the skin. These products can also be irritating to the skin. Many patients are not able to use them every day due to this irritation

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an effective exfoliating treatment for those suffering from mild acne. The exfoliation treatment minimizes the appearance of whiteheads and blackheads creating a smoother appearance to the skin’s surface. It can also work to diminish shallow scarring acne breakouts often leave behind. It is designed to clear your pores and remove dead skin cells.

IPL Photofacial Therapy

IPL Photofacials use laser light to improve the appearance of your skin. Specifically, an IPL Photofacial can treat acne, acne scars, minimize pores and reduce the size of the skin’s oil glands. IPL is also efficacious in diminishing acne flare-ups, by helping to kill the bacteria which causes acne. Clients with Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV are suitable candidates for IPL Phototherapy. Those with darker skin tones and complexions can be treated safely with infrared light therapy.

With just a few sessions, IPL treatments can clear up even the most extreme cases of facial acne and improve acne scarring. Between four to six treatments are typically required, with each session spaced a few weeks apart. Sessions can last anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes. Patients can expect to see some improvements after their first treatment.
