Causes of Hyperpigmentation in the Intimate area

Hyperpigmentation involving intimate areas is normal which many people experience. It is a cosmetic issue of ever-increasing concern for many clients and that can affect all skin types. The skin around the external genital areas and anal area darkens due to an excessive amount of melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that impacts the coloration of your skin. The following factors can cause intimate hyperpigmentation, including:

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes (such as those that occur during pregnancy or menopause)
  • Using hormonal contraception
  • Wearing tight constructive clothing
  • Exposure to UV rays
  • Injury or inflammation
  • Shaving or Waxing

The aging process in the genital-perineal area and adjacent areas occurs in the same way as the remainder of the body. During aging, there is a loss of collagen and elastin, with decreased firmness of the skin. Another effect of aging involves hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin, including the skin around the external genital and inner thigh area. This hyperpigmentation is often a result of genetic predisposition, and hormonal changes. Individuals with Fitzpatrick type IV skin type or darker, have an increased prevalence of hyperpigmentation. An increase in estrogen activity also stimulates an increase in tyrosinase which increases melanin production and leads to excess hyperpigmentation. There are also external factors which cause the intimate areas to darken. These external factors include dry skin, certain medications, hormonal imbalance, friction, or frequent use of tight pants and underwear. All of these external factors can cause the inner thighs and intimate areas to hyperpigment and darken. Another common cause for skin darkening is hair removal by waxing or resulting folliculitis, which can lead to an inflammatory reaction which causes the skin to darken, producing an increased amount of melanin production.

Darkening of the skin or hyperpigmentation involving most intimate skin areas can negatively affect our physical and emotional well-being. The intimate area has become the most requested area that patients are requesting skin lightening. Vaginal skin bleaching to lighten hyperpigmentation in the intimate area has been common in Europe and the Middle East for many years. The process of vaginal skin lightening of the vulva, perianal area, and inner thighs has become an area of increasing popular treatment in the United States. Many patients, regardless of ethnicity, tend to develop areas of hyperpigmentation including the face, neck, chest, armpits, buttocks, and back. This pigmentation is especially common in patients with darker skin tones. Dermamelan® Intimate was formulated to meet this need. Dermamelan® Intimate is the gamechanging depigmentation treatment for people to gain new confidence and help to restore and even out their normal skin tone.

Causes of Hyperpigmentation

How it works

The Dermamelan® intimate peel comprises a unique mix of active compounds that depigment while also addressing the inflammatory component responsible for most hyperpigmentation, resulting in a visible improvement in skin quality, turgor, and water retention in the area treated.

The Dermamelan® Intimate depigmentation treatment consists of two phases. The first phase involves the application of a specially formulated depigmenting peel in office. The second phase consists of aftercare application of a depigmenting gel applied twice daily for a minimum of 90 days. Compliance with the home schedule is essential to achieve the depigmenting objective in the short and long term.

Dermamelan® Intimate works simultaneously on many areas of melanogenesis by:

  • Removing existing hyperpigmentation and preventing it from recurring in the skin.
  • Preventing the inflammatory action by blocking the enzyme COX (Cyclo-oxygenase) which is responsible for the inflammatory response.
  • Renewing the outermost layers of the skin stimulating the production of fibroblasts, which produces new collagen and elastin.
  • Blocking the transfer of melanosomes and reducing the activation of tyrosinase.

The Peel contains six active ingredients, whose mechanism of action work on depigmentation, inflammation, and anti-aging. Active ingredients include:

  • azelaic acid
  • ferulic acid
  • phytic acid
  • kojic acid
  • lactic acid
  • salicylic acid
  • niacinamide
  • glycyrrhiza root extract
  • azeloyl glycine

*This treatment does not contain hydroquinone.

The Dermamelan® Intimate Pack provides all the necessary products to perform the Dermamelan® Intimate depigmentation treatment. It contains depigmenting products that were specifically designed for the genitourinary-perianal area, mons pubis, inner thighs, and bikini area. It contains the Dermamelan® Intimate peel, post-peel neutralizing spray, Dermamelan® Intimate mask, and occlusive film. The proper application and usage of the kit ensures lightening of your intimate regions within a matter of months.

Phase One
The in-office Dermamelan® treatment is performed by Dr Hudson, a licensed practitioner. Phase One’s goal is to intensively depigment your skin. Dr Hudson will begin by washing the treatment area with lukewarm water and gauze. He will then apply the mesolips protector around the internal genital area to protect these areas from the solution and prevent the Dermamelan® solution from migrating. Next, Dr Hudson applies the Dermamelan® intimate peeling solution to the areas that you desire to treat. This solution will remain in place for 7 minutes. Dr Hudson then sprays a post-peel neutralizing solution onto the treated area and ensures that no residue is left. A layer of the Dermamelan® Intimate mask is then applied over the treatment area. If needed, more mesolips protector will be applied. The last in-office step is the application of the Dermamelan® intimate occlusive film. This film activates the active ingredients and helps keep all the Dermamelan® components in place. Clients are then discharged home after the film is applied. The film needs to remain in place for two hours. You will be provided a pair of disposable panties to wear home.

Phase Two
The goal of Phase Two is to regulate the body’s production of melanin. The patient removes the occlusive film applied during your treatment two hours after leaving the clinic, by taking a lukewarm shower to remove the mask. Once all the Dermamelan® product is completely removed, the post- procedure crystal fiber mask is then applied over the treatment area. For the easiest application, Dr Hudson recommends lying face up on a towel. This mask is left in place for 10-15 minutes before washing it off. After 48 hours have elapsed, the client will begin applying the Dermamelan® Intimate Home Depigmenting Gel over the treated area. You will want to wear a panty liner to protect your intimate areas during this phase. We recommend applying this gel twice daily for 90 days. Depending on the extent of your hyperpigmentation, your specific instructions may vary. Always follow Dr Hudson’s instructions for optimal results.

Intimate hyperpigmentation often occurs gradually and has many contributing factors ranging from accumulated skin trauma to puberty to pregnancy to friction and more. Therefore, it is not going to magically disappear overnight. Although the in-office Dermamelan® Intimate peel is highly effective, it needs to be paired with an at-home depigmenting gel cream to continuously reduce the hyperpigmentation and ensure optimal results. Many patients will see some initial skin lightening a week after the Dermamelan® Intimate peel performed by Dr. Hudson and continued improvement in the first month with consistent home depigmenting gel applications. After three months of the at-home depigmentation protocol, clients should see significant improvement in intimate hyperpigmentation.

The Dermamelan® Intimate home depigmenting gel cream should be applied once or twice a day to the area that was treated whether it be the genital-perineal area or inner thighs. The depigmenting gel will work to reduce this hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration with superior regulating action. The Dermamelan® Intimate depigmenting gel cream contains ingredients as niacinamide, potassium azeloyl diglycinate, tranexamic acid, phytic acid, salicylic acid, kojic acid, and glycyrrhiza glabra root extract to actively prevent further hyperpigmentation while improving the appearance of existing dark spots. The depigmenting gel should be used at bedtime on the treated area for 90 days to treat the area of hyperpigmentation. The depigmenting gel cream has several functions which includes:

  • Improving the barrier function of the vulvar epithelium
  • Strengthening and increasing the skin’s elasticity, tone, and turgor
  • Decreasing genital and perennial hyperpigmentation
  • Protecting and moisturizing the vulvar epithelium

Skin redness and feeling of being sunburnt may occur for the first 2 days following treatment. Flaking usually appears around day 3 and can proceed for up to one week. Once the flaking subsides, you will start to notice improvement of the pigmentation. For further improvement and maintenance, you will be required to continue Dermamelan® homecare for a period of ninety days. Initially, when using your maintenance creams, the skin may feel sensitive, tight and may continue flaking; this usually subsides after about 2 weeks.

You may experience mild to moderate downtime following a Dermamelan® Intimate Peel. This typically lasts for about 1 to 2 weeks but can vary from person to person. Redness and irritation along with dryness and tightness are common side effects as well. These usually subside within a few days after treatment.

The Dermamelan® Intimate treatment is successful with proper application and with strict adherence to the at-home depigmentation regimen. Many patients notice improvement in the first month with consistent home depigmenting gel cream application. After three months of implementing the at-home depigmentation protocol, clients will experience an even greater improvement in hyperpigmentation. For increased skin lightening results, the peel can be repeated in three to six months

Results can usually be seen as early as 1-week post-treatment. Over the course of the next several weeks the pigment will continue to lift and lighten, with maximal results typically seen within twelve weeks. The skin will appear even, luminous, and healthy after just one treatment.

Typically, one Dermamelan® Intimate Peel will give you 90 to 95% improvement in your hyperpigmentation.
