IPL Photofacial treatment
How it works
The IPL Photofacial treatment uses short bursts of high-intensity light to produce youngerlooking skin that is firmer and more even in tone and texture. Unlike a laser that focuses just one wavelength of light on the skin, IPL emits varying wavelengths of light, similar to that of a photo flash. IPL’s light is more scattered and less focused compared to a laser, treating various skin conditions simultaneously. Light waves penetrate deep down into the dermis or second skin layer without damaging the epidermis or outer layer. Using the principle of “selective photothermolysis”, IPL targets different chromophores within the skin, specifically melanin and hemoglobin, without damaging the surrounding tissue. Brown and red pigment within the skin is thermally heated and become damaged. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate skin cells to produce new collagen. The body’s natural metabolic and healing processes then begin to clear damaged cells. Damaged cells undergo mild desquamation, lift, and eventually slough away. The photothermal energy also eliminates the fine vessels that cause redness and reduces the unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions. Treated sunspots will initially darken over about the course of a week following treatment before these lift and slough away through normal skin cellular renewal, revealing fresh, brighter skin. Collagen and elastin are stimulated which tightens the skin, resulting in improved skin texture and a more youthful appearance

IPL photofacials can be used to treat the face and neck or any areas involving the body that exhibit signs of UV sun damage. The most common areas treated are those most exposed to the damaging effects of the sun such as the face, neck and décolleté, back of hands, chest, and shoulders. Clients with Type I-IV Fitzpatrick Skin tones are considered ideal candidates for treatment. Unfortunately, IPL photofacial treatments are unsuitable for clients with darker skin tones due to the elevated risk of developing hyperpigmentation since this is a thermally based laser.
The number of treatments will depend on your skin and your desired result. To ensure optimal results, a series of 4 to 6 treatments performed at intervals every 4 weeks are recommended.
The procedure is gentle, non-invasive, and safe. While everyone’s tolerance is different, there is usually no need for a topical anesthetic. Patients liken the feeling to a rubber band snapping on their skin, uncomfortable, but not unbearable.
After undergoing a treatment, you can expect to see mild redness, and it may appear as if you have a mild sunburn. This should resolve after a few hours, but in some cases, it could last a day or two. You may return to normal activities immediately. You can start to see healthier looking skin just several days after treatment. Sunspots, age spots, and or broken blood vessels usually begin to clear up in one to two weeks. Targeted spots will darken, and eventually lift and flake off in a period of 7 to 10 days. Sunspots, age spots, and or broken blood vessels usually begin to clear up in one to two weeks. As an added bonus, you may experience a temporary reduction in hair growth in treated areas. Supplemented by a good skincare program, the effects of IPL can last one to two years.
After completing a treatment package, you should be able to maintain your beautiful, more even skin tone for at least a year before requiring additional maintenance treatments. The use of sunscreen is essential to preserving your results and preventing the pigment from reoccurring.
